Under natural conditions, the horse’s hindquarters essentially makes a forwards and backwards movement, i.e. protraction and retraction. On turns or during lateral movements, abduction and adduction can also be observed. The angles of the hindquarters necessitate much more complicated muscular interplay than in the forehand. For example, M. quadrizeps femoris, an extensor of the stifle joint, also requires contraction of its antagonist M. biceps femoris in the standing phase, because the stifle would otherwise be overstretched.
